iPhone 1st Generation

Making its grand debut in June of 2007, the iPhone 1st Generation revolutionized the Smartphone market across the globe. The original iPhone 1st Generation was a product produced by Apple, Inc. and lead by the then CEO Steve Jobs. It was a dream of Jobs' to completely change the cell phone industry with his new product. Through innovative features, business savvy, and a little bit of luck, Jobs was able to see his dream to fruition.

One of the most notable characteristics of the 1st Generation iPhone was its atheistically pleasing form factor. The phone had rounded corners with a vast majority of its surface area designed as a touch-screen. By utilizing touch-screen technology, Apple was able to do away with the tactile buttons and keyboards used in phones of yore. The screen stretched 3.5 inches across with a pixel resolution of 320x480. 1st Generation iPhones came with an optional 4, 8, or 16 GB of flash memory and ran on the now unsupported iOS 3.1.3.

The first appearance of the iPhone was limited to just one choice of cell service provider. Collaborating with Cingular Wireless (now ATT&T), Apple brought controversy upon itself by keeping its product excusive. According to Fred Vogelstein of Wired News, this partnership was estimated at being worth upwards of $150 million dollars. Some users were able to find a way around this by using a type of device modification known as Jailbreaking.

The 1st generation iPhone was priced between $499 and $599, depending on the model selected. Just three months after its June release, Apple cut the price of the iPhone by nearly a third. This upset a great number of users who previously had paid the more expensive price. Responding to the outcry, CEO Steve Jobs awarded individuals who had a valid claim a $100 credit towards any Apple product.

Ultimately, Apple's Jobs was able to turn his dream into a reality. The 1st Generation iPhone was named the 2007 Invention of the Year by Time Magazine. By developing touch screen technology into an aesthetically pleasing package, coupled with intelligent business practices, the iPhone 1st Generation was truly able to reshape and revolutionize the smart-phone market.
