iPhone Third Generation

The iPhone 3GS was the third generation of Apple's groundbreaking line of smartphones. Launched in June 2009, it marked the beginning of the S model of iPhones that continued with the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5S. The S models featured minor improvements to the previous year's model. The iPhone 3GS was very similar to the 3G in appearance. It featured rounded edges and a plastic back.

Like previous generations of the smartphone, the iPhone 3GS was a huge success with consumers. Over one million iPhones were sold in the first weekend that the phone was available. Although the phone was popular with buyers, critics did have some criticism for the 3GS. Some critics felt that the 3GS was not enough of an improvement over the 3G to justify purchasing it. At the time of its release, the third generation iPhone was advertised with the slogan, "The fastest, most powerful iPhone yet." The specs of the device support that claim. The iPhone 3GS was two times faster than the previous generation. A Samsung APL0298C05 chip powered the phone. It also featured 256 megabytes of RAM.

Several important features debuted with the 3GS. The phone came pre-loaded with Apple's latest operating system, iOS 4. The iPhone 3GS also included a video camera. The camera app allowed users to take still pictures with the 3.2 megapixel camera. The camera contained several important features: auto focus, auto exposure lock, and digital zoom. In addition to taking still images, the camera app could record VGA video.

Voice Control was another feature that came with the 3GS. This feature allowed the user to operate the phone and play music with voice commands. VoiceOver, which was introduced with the iPod Shuffle, dictated text and music metadata.

The iPhone 3GS was not without controversy. Many users complained that their iPhone overheated. Other users noticed that the white plastic back turned brown from overheating. Some experts believed that faulty battery cells caused the overheating because of a similar problem with an earlier model of the iPod Nano. Apple advised buyers to avoid leaving their phone in a hot car or in direct sunlight.

Apple still supports the iPhone 3GS, but the phone only runs some features on iOS 6. Since the 3GS cannot run iOS 7, the new operating system will force 3GS owners to upgrade.
